Motorola officially announced the latest version of the Moto E smartphone last Wednesday. The handset comes with a starting price of $119, which will get you a 3G-compatible device. For those who want to get the newest Moto E with 4G LTE connectivity, they may have to pay $30 more.
Many consider last year's version of the Moto E handset a very good option when it comes to low-cost smartphones. It was priced at $129 and lacked 4G LTE connectivity, but still it offered good value with its software features, easily customizable casings, and a pretty decent battery.
For this year, Motorola has decided to further improve upon this handset's preceding version. Thus, apart from the aforementioned 4G capability, the new Moto E boasts a quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.2 GigaHertz. Internal storage has also been increased to 8 gigabytes (plus removable microSD card support), which is really a significant improvement upon last year's version, which only had 4 gigabytes.
The latest Moto E also comes with a bigger display screen. From 4.3 inches last year, it has now expanded to 4.5 inches this year. However, the newest version retains the same 960 by 540 resolution that the 2014 edition had.
Snapshot-happy folks may be delighted to know that for the new Moto E, a camera on the front side has been added. Indeed, a VGA camera on the front may just be the right complement to this smartphone's 5-megapixel camera on the rear side. On top of all that, the device also has additional sensors to help trigger Motorola's Quick Capture and active display features. Software-wise, the new Moto E runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop, the latest version of the Android mobile operating system.
Motorola has incorporated on the Moto E handset some other nifty features that are found on the Moto X, the company's pricier and more prominent flagship offering. For instance, on the new Moto E, you can now open the camera app with a simple twist of your wrist. Also for good measure, Moto Display is included for pulsing alerts on the lock screen which displays without the device waking up.
And like last year's Moto E, this year's version can be easily customized. The device basically comes in either black or white front colors, but users can try out different bands (six options in all). You can even go for clear casings.
