Motorola accidentally leaked the Moto G Maker page to its official website just recently. For those not in the know, the Moto Maker is a tool by the American mobile manufacturer that is designed to let buyers of Motorola handsets customize how exactly they they want their devices to look like when delivered to them. As for the Moto G Maker tool, customers can use it to select options for colors, finish, and even internal storage capacity of the Moto G smartphone. The tool was first spotted by a user who posted it on the Reddit community forum. The post has since been removed and now redirects to Motorola’s official website instead.
The Moto G Maker suggests that Motorola is indeed leaning towards giving mobile consumers more say in how they want their handsets to look like. In the past, various phone makers, including Motorola, have only given very limited options to buyers especially in customizing the smartphones they are buying. Most often, customers can only choose the color of the rear cover. But this new Moto G Maker indicates that Motorola is now more willing to give its customers more control over the look of their smartphones.
The Moto G handset looks like the ideal candidate for customization. Motorola is positioning the Moto G as a budget friendly mobile device, and the phone maker is offering the handset with quite a number of color options.
But last year’s Moto G model was hit with some criticism over its lack of a built in LTE processor, which would have let the handset connect to long term evolution (LTE) networks operated by most wireless carriers in the United States.
This was a blow to Motorola who was already struggling to keep up in an increasingly competitive smartphone industry. Much of the global smartphone market has been effectively captured by the industry leaders, Apple and Samsung. The rest of the players, such as Motorola, LG, and HTC, just to name a few, are left with the scraps. What is worse is that these phone makers have to contend with the growing threat posed by up and coming Chinese mobile manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Huawei who continue to eat away at market shares by constantly introducing inexpensive but feature heavy smartphones to the market.
Motorola is definitely hoping that the release of the new Moto G handset can help the phone maker turn things around. Nothing is certain at this point, but there are rumors that the new Moto G device will feature enhanced specifications, including 4G LTE connectivity, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, and 8 gigabytes of internal memory. It may also come with a 5 inch display screen and a 13 megapixel camera on the rear side. Until the phone is officially unveiled by Motorola, fans of the device will have to wait and see.
