More than a year ago, Netflix had decided to include an in-app subscription feature in its app for iOS powered mobile devices, and that move might have contributed immensely in its growing popularity ever since. Indeed during the last month, the app had reached the Top Grossing chart for the first time, landing at number nine. Recently, Netflix’s app adds another reason to celebrate, for it has become the top grossing app for iPhone devices in all of the United States.
According to the latest report published by Sensor Tower, the last few months have seen the Netflix app increase its weekly net revenues from just below $50,000 to almost $2.9 million. Sensor Tower was also quick to point out that Netflix almost captured the number one position before, specifically back in November 14th earlier this year when it landed on the number two spot. However, it should be noted though that App Annie, another app analysis company, had only reported that Netflix reached the number three position on November 8th. Sensor Tower and App Annie do have different methodologies when it comes to measuring the popularity of a particular app, but having said that, neither of them have reported Netflix earning the top grossing position last month.
Obviously, becoming the top grossing app for iPhone devices in America is a big deal. There is no doubt that the Netflix app is clearly improving in terms of the volume of users in the US, despite some concern early on that the American market was getting too saturated. Moreover, after experiencing some rather uninspiring growth in the first half of 2016, it appears that the app is gaining some momentum.
Of course, it helps that Netflix is continuously expanding its catalog of programs and content. According to a report published by the Business Insider, the number one and number 3 most popular original shows respectively are Fuller House and Gilmore Girls -- both are made available from Netflix. And there’s Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, House of Cards, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, just to name a few.
The next logical step for Netflix is now to continue to add to its already formidable catalog of programs. Next year should see the company double the number of titles it offers for consumers. It is now even considering the possibility of developing unscripted programs to be released some time in 2017.
