Sure, push notifications from apps are quite useful, especially when we want to be updated of any new developments either in our daily personal lives or when it comes work or business related matters. But as any mobile user knows these days, there are just some apps that provide too many alerts, and as often suspected, those notifications end up being not that important after all (but just took away five minutes of our time, just like that).
It goes without saying that determining which push notifications are important and which are not (without checking them first, that is) is kind of tricky. But there is a new artificial intelligence technology that might help. Developers TonTon Hsien-De Huang and Hung-Yu Kao have outlined a new machine learning called C-3PO (we know, we know -- the full designation is officially as follows: Click-sequence-aware DeeP Neural Network-based Pop-uPs RecOmmendation ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ).
Basically what the C-3PO AI does is go through a mobile user’s browsing history, including that person’s online purchasing history and even financial details or transaction record (by the way, a Taiwanese web company -- Leopard Mobile -- supplied all the data). The AI then checks which specific pop up notifications the user is actually clicking from the vast ocean of alerts he or she has received over time. Based on all that historical information, C-3PO then proceeds to trim the total volume of incoming push notifications, leaving only those it deemed the most likely to be clicked by the mobile user.
To be perfectly clear, the trimming process still has plenty of room for improvement. But the developers are already looking to further fine tune the neural network model, so that it could perform complex tasks more efficiently. According to TonTon Hsien-De Huang and Hung-Yu Kao, they would like to see the machine learning’s capabilities applied to a system built for advertisers, especially with regards to the frequency and manner of deploying ads.
We now live in a world wherein navigating through push notifications is already part of our daily routine. But that does not mean that we should not be exploring ways in which we can filter out the spam from the really important stuff. Right now, our only resort is to either deactivate notifications altogether (at the risk of blocking out the legitimate alerts), or remove that particularly annoying app from our mobile devices. But now that C-3PO is here, we might not have to do any of that.
