According to a recent report published by the Wall Street Journal, it is quite possible that the base model of this year’s highly awaited iPhone 7 will come with 32 gigabytes of internal storage. That is two times the capacity of the base models (at 16 gigabytes of built in memory) of previous iPhone models released by Apple in past years.
In terms of memory configuration, there have been some speculation that Apple will introduce a high end iPhone model that will feature a remarkable 256 gigabytes of memory. As of today, the tech giant’s current flagship devices, the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus, can only offer a maximum of 128 gigabytes of storage capacity. As a side note, Apple’s iPad Pro tablet offers storage tiers of 32 gigabytes by default, and then 128 gigabytes and 256 gigabytes.
Beginning with the iPhone 6 a couple of years ago, Apple had started getting rid of the 32 gigabyte capacity, preferring instead to offer an entry level 16 gigabyte memory configuration for its flagship devices (which Apple started offering in 2009 with the release of the iPhone 3Gs). This trend has of course continued with last year’s iPhone 6s devices. iOS mobile users do have the option of upping their iPhone’s memory capacity to 64 gigabytes, as long as they are willing to fork an additional hundred bucks.
It bears noting that there is quite a number of other smartphone devices out there that offer 32 gigabytes of onboard storage at the minimum, especially those offered by Samsung, LG, and HTC, just to name a few. In this day and age wherein mobile apps, high res images, and multimedia downloads (movies, audio tracks) are all the rage, it does seem inadequate to only have 16 gigabytes of storage space in one’s handset. In Apple’s case, many expect the company’s iPhone offering for this year to be equipped with better camera specifications, plus the availability of 4K video, which would mean that having a higher memory capacity will make more sense going forward.
This year’s new iPhone models are expected to be officially announced by Apple later in September. Rumors abound as to the devices’ possible features, which may include a next generation A10 chip, an ultra slim design (potentially at the expense of the 3.5 millimeter headphone jack), enhanced water proofing capabilities, support for dual SIMs, dual camera configuration, and stereo speakers, among many others.
