Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are great and useful and all, but sometimes too much use can be harmful at times. For instance, too much texting, social media, or Internet surfing on mobile can lead to lack of sleep for some mobile users, especially if the display screens of their handset emits too bright a light.
Fortunately for mobile users, especially those who own devices powered by the iOS mobile operating system, Apple is doing something about it. As a matter of fact, the iPhone maker will soon be rolling out an update to its operating system that should help people get more sleep. According to the tech giant’s developer website, iOS 9.3, the upcoming latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, will come with a feature called Night Shift, which has the ability to adjust the display screens of iOS run devices, in order to make easier for mobile users’ eyes during bedtime.
There have been numerous studies published over the years indicating that the light emitted by electronic devices actually has an effect on sleep patterns. This is mainly due to the blue light given off by most of today’s LED screens, which can actually influence how much the human body produces the melatonin hormone. For those not in the know, melatonin is responsible for signaling our brains that it is time to go to dreamland already.
With the Night Shift feature, the clock and location information provided by the iOS device is used to ascertain if it is already night time, ergo, time for bed. As indicated on the feature’s developer website, Night Shift automatically adjusts the colors of the device’s display screen, shifting them to warmer colors. And when morning arrives, the adjusted colors are reverted back to their normal settings.
It is a cool feature, for sure, and no doubt some users will be excited to take advantage of it. Alas, iOS 9.3 is only made available to developers for now, and Apple has not exactly announced yet just when the next iOS update will be deployed. But as soon as the iPhone maker gives the go signal, iOS users will be looking to use the feature, or at least find out if indeed helps them catch some needed Zs.
As for other expected new features of iOS 9.3, these include an update to the Notes mobile app that allows mobile users to secure information via a password or fingerprint scan, and sort notes according to date or filename. Apple also continues to fine tune its News mobile app to bring more personalized news articles, and is tweaking its Health software to help users search for third party mobile apps quicker.
