According to the newest leak (courtesy of SamMobile), Samsung’s upcoming flagship device for 2017, the Galaxy S8, is said to sport a 4K display screen as well as an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant developed by Viv, the startup that Samsung had acquired about a week ago. Co-founded by Dag Kittlaus (who had a hand in the development of Apple’s Siri digital assistant), Viv is a firm that aims to come up with an AI assistant that will give Siri a run for its money, and now that it has become part of the world’s biggest seller of smartphone devices, Viv is in a good position to bring its vision to life.
As reported by SamMobile, the rumor came from a post published on Weibo by a known mobile tipster based in China. The post claims that not only will the Galaxy S8 feature Viv’s AI assistant, it will also come with upgrades on hardware. The Galaxy S8 was previously speculated to come in a couple of variants -- both sporting a curved display screen, just like Samsung’s Edge devices. The handsets are also rumored to be offered in two different sizes -- a 5.1 inch edition and the other a 5.5 inch variant. The 5.1 inch variant will reportedly come with a 2K AMOLED display screen, while the 5.5 inch edition will come with a 4K display screen.
Of course, Samsung is far from being the only tech firm to put more effort into improving the AI features of its mobile devices. Google is joining in on the fun, working on an AI platform that will seamlessly integrate with its recently announcedPixel devices and its Google Home smart speaker and home assistant system.
Focusing on an improved AI assistant would be a wise decision for Samsung, and if anything else, it would give its fans something new to look forward to next year when the Galaxy S8 is launched. If the South Korean tech giant can pull it off and deliver an AI product that will truly rival Apple’s Siri, then it might contribute significantly in repairing Samsung’s damaged image, especially after its unfortunate Galaxy Note 7recall nightmare.
The Galaxy S8 is rumored to be launching in February of next year, most likely during the 2017 Mobile World Congress event. It bears noting that past Galaxy flagship devices from Samsung also made their debut during the annual tech conference, and next year should be no exception.
