Samsung has announced that it has plans of incorporating an artificial intelligence (AI) digital assistant to the Galaxy S8, its flagship device for next year. If the South Korean phone maker makes good in its plans a few months from now, then it would be joining rival tech giants such as Apple and Google in making full use of AI features in their respective smartphone offerings.
According to a report published by Reuters, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8 will include a voice activated platform developed by Viv Labs, a startup firm that was looking to create a digital assistant that would rival Apple’s Siri (as rumored earlier). Samsung had completed its acquisition of Viv a month ago, and it appears that the company is eager to take full advantage of Viv’s expertise when it comes to AI.
Furthermore, according to Samsung, third party developer will be able to integrate Viv’s AI digital assistant, although the company did not provide any specific details regarding which kind of services will be offered. As explained by Rhee Injong, the executive vice president of Samsung, developers can integrate various services to the the Galaxy S8’s AI, and the AI in turn will learn on its own in trying to offer these services the best way possible to consumers.
Samsung is looking to release the Galaxy S8 some time within the first six months of 2017 (possibly in February). In order to surpass its predecessor, the current Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S8 will have to deliver plenty. The Galaxy S7 after all just helped Samsung register its most profitable quarter since 2014, when it recorded a net income of $5.2 billion during the second quarter of this year.
More importantly, in light of the demise of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, Samsung badly needs a hit smartphone soon. After being forced to conduct a double recall of the embattled phablet, the South Korean tech giant was left with no choice but to revise its third quarter profit estimate by $2.3 billion. Various industry watchers now are saying that in the absence of the Galaxy Note 7 (which would have competed well with Apple’s iPhone 7 devices), other rival Android phone makers are now looking to exploit the void created, especially as we enter into the busy holiday shopping season. Sure, Samsung still has its flagship Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge to offer come winter time, but as history has shown, buyers tend to buy devices that are recently released.
