As part of its Uncarrier 11 campaign, T-Mobile debuted a mobile app called T-Mobile Tuesdays about a couple of weeks ago. One of the free giveaways promised to users of the app was free pizza, but it appears that the third biggest wireless carrier in the United States has been compelled to discontinue its free pizza deal, but only temporarily (we hope).
T-Mobile has announced the discontinuation itself, citing that it was forced to do so because of the overwhelming customer demand. Starting next week, the free pizza offer is officially suspended. For those not familiar with this deal, it involves a free medium size Domino’s pizza with a couple of toppings made available to subscribers of T-Mobile who use the T-Mobile Tuesdays app weekly every Tuesday (thus the name of the mobile app).
T-Mobile may have underestimated the number of mobile users who want to take advantage of deals that promise to provide free pizza. It does not help that apparently each Domino’s branch has a limit of 100 free pizzas -- which meant that the pizza chain would unsurprisingly have a hard time dealing with the sheer volume of orders from T-Mobile’s subscribers. John Legere, the chief executive officer of T-Mobile, has revealed that more than a couple of million T-Mobile subscribers have downloaded the T-Mobile Tuesdays mobile app, leading to reports of the app crashing, failing to launch, or causing problems when customers attempt to claim freebies.
The whole experience is certainly not a pleasant one, not only for Domino’s, but also for those users who did not quite sate their craving for pizza of the free kind. Legere has recently posted a tweet containing the internal email circulating at Domino’s, stating the decision to stop the pizza promo, at least for an indefinite period of time.
So what are disgruntled pizza loving T-Mobile customers to do? Well, T-Mobile is offering them a free Lyft ride of up to $15, from Tuesday to Thursday, starting next week, specifically June 21st. But is this a permanent replacement for the pizza deal? That has not been made clear yet. Interestingly, $15 of Lyft credit was the intended bonus giveaway offered to users of the T-Mobile Tuesdays mobile app this week.
Still, even though free pizza is off the menu for now, T-Mobile subscribers can still avail themselves of a free small frosty from Wendy’s weekly and a free VUDU movie download. Also, it bears noting that next week’s deal will feature a $20 voucher to spend at the official Major League Baseball website (MLB.com).
