The National Safety Council (NSC), a U.S. based nonprofit organization promoting health and safety, has launched a campaign targeting cell phone use while driving. According to a 2005 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study, drivers using a cell phone are four times more likely to be in a crash. The NSC is on a mission to "Lead a change in our nation’s cultural norms, so people come to view cell phone conversations and text messaging while driving as unsafe and socially unacceptable."
The organization is lobbying businesses and law makers to enact sweeping bans on the use of voice and messaging devices while driving. A short video on the organization's website features the stories of a son and mother killed in car accidents involving young drivers talking on their phones while driving. "When he got out of the car, the first thing he admitted was he was talking on a cell phone. My mother died within a couple hours from blunt force trama to the head, neck, and chest. I just call it 'Death by cell Phone.'" [More at NSC]
