Though not as popular as other Android device offerings from mobile giants such as Samsung and LG, OnePlus’ smartphones are fairly well regarded among Android mobile users. The tricky part however is in the purchasing of these handsets. This is because for the longest time, the Chinese phone maker has chosen to sell its devices mainly through a rather inconvenient invite only system. Indeed, those who were interested in buying a OnePlus smartphone had to join contests, complete tasks on social media, or pressure acquaintances who already managed to snag a OnePlus device.
But all that is about to change with the upcoming launch of the company’s latest smartphone the OnePlus 3, which happens on June 14th of this year (as hinted earlier this year). Yup, OnePlus has decided to heed the pleas of prospective buyers, and is now looking to get rid of the invite only arrangement for good. Sure, those with a OnePlus VR headset may enjoy a bit of a head start, but when it is 3 PM ET on the OnePlus website, everybody has as good a chance as the next guy in finally getting his OnePlus handset.
When OnePlus first started selling its smartphones about a couple of years ago, it saw the invite only system as a way of managing demand for its products. By effectively limiting the availability of its devices, the company had enjoyed better leverage in making sure its supply met the demand. Also, it proved a wise decision in ensuring that no OnePlus handset is sitting in a store shelf somewhere unsold.
But much has changed since 2014. First of all, OnePlus has earned some brand recognition right now, and has a following to boot. It has since released three devices -- the OnePlus One, the OnePlus 2, and the OnePlus X -- and a fourth one on the way. With the release of the OnePlus 3, is the Chinese phone maker finally ready to ship smartphones like other regular OEMs?
As of this writing, not much is known about the OnePlus 3 yet. There is talk that OnePlus will be showcasing a new design for its fourth handset release. Regardless, what is clear is that the Chinese company will be facing fierce competition this year. Samsung and LG have already released their respective flagship devices to much acclaim, and Apple is expected to launch its newest iPhone model later this year. Can OnePlus keep up with the big boys? We will all find out after June 14.
