The OnePlus 5T is one of the latest devices to be released. Among the many reasons it is highly sought out by smartphone users (that is, apart from its Star Wars tie in) is because of its 18 to 9 screen. But while it is just reaching the hands of those who had ordered the device ahead of time, there is some disappointment on the device. If you have been planning to use the OnePlus 5T with your favorite movie streaming service, you may want to put a raincheck on this.
New owners of the OnePlus 5T (as well as those of its predecessor, the OnePlus 5) have just discovered that their device is not able to play HD quality videos from streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play Movies. The discovery was initially posted on the OnePlus community forums. Another member of the forum conducted a DRM test on the device and confirmed that it only supports Widevine Level 3 right management certification. What this means is that the device is not allowed to stream video with above standard quality yet.
And apparently, this same issue exists on older OnePlus smartphones. If not for the comment on the forum, users would not have realized they were not streaming HD quality videos. As a matter of fact, they were only streaming videos at standard definition. Considering a number of cheaper Android devices are able to stream HD content, it is a bit of a disappointment for those who have purchased OnePlus devices.
Despite lacking certification for this, OnePlus 5 and 5T users may still stream HD quality videos; especially from streaming services that do not use Widevine DRM system for copyright protection. One alternative to the streaming services mentioned is YouTube, which allows all OnePlus device users to stream video in 1080 p quality without any issues.
Thankfully, a spokesperson from the phone manufacturer has addressed the concern. Speaking to The Verge, OnePlus assured its users that they are already working on an update that would allow HD quality streaming on these two devices. Apart from this promise, the spokesperson did not explain why advanced Widevine support was not originally included. In addition to this, they did not specify when the new update will be released.
Not being able to stream HD quality videos is just one issue many OnePlus 5T users have experienced. Ever since the device shipped, users have been reporting a problem with their phone’s camera when they use Snapchat. According to these complaints, their camera would zoom in 2x when they take a photo or record a video in Snapchat. Because of this, users weren’t able to take a normal picture and video. Thankfully, OnePlus quickly fixed the issue on its end. If you are still experiencing this error, it may be because Snapchat has not yet released a software update to fix it.
