In a move that comes as no great surprise, Palm announced yesterday that it will discontinue developing new handsets to run on Windows Mobile, instead electing to concentrate efforts on further developing and improving its new webOS operating system.
Moving forward, Palm will only release new handsets developed for its webOS platform. Joining the Pre among the company's new generation of smartphones, the recently announced Palm Pixi is to be the second member of the webOS family when it is released later this year on Sprint's network.
Despite hopes that the Pre would be able to buoy the struggling handset manufacturer, Palm shipped just 823,000 smartphones during the first fiscal quarter, a year-over-year decrease of 30 percent. Although beating many analyst's expectation, Palm announced first quarter losses of $164.5 million.
With new webOS handsets on the horizon and with agreements in the works to bring the Pre and future products to additional networks and markets, Palm is hoping to claw its way back to health slowly but surely.
