Yup, it is happening again. New iPhones are about to hit store shelves in a couple of days, and like several years past, people are already starting to line up at Apple stores in the United States. The latest iPhone models -- the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus -- will not be hitting stores until 8 AM local time on Friday, September 25th, but when that time comes, people who have already reserved their new iPhones (or those who failed to the device order via Apple’s online store) should be able to stroll to the nearest Apple store and get their handset, that is if they do not mind the possibility of getting in line.
The earlier reports cited the city of San Francisco as one of the locations with visible queues of overly enthusiastic would be iPhone 6s owners. But in outlets such as Apple’s flagship store located in Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York City, no lines of anxious iPhone 6s buyers could be found.
The iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus were officially introduced by Apple during its September 9th event earlier this month. These two new iPhone models come with faster processors, enhanced cameras, and 3D Touch, a new touch screen technology that allows for pressure sensitive interaction between display screen and the mobile user’s fingertips. The new iPhones’ pricing starts at $199 if bought on a standard two year agreement, but with Apple’s newly launched iPhone Upgrade Program, consumers can update their iPhone devices every year by paying a regular monthly installment.
Almost a decade after Apple first introduced them, iPhones remain the company’s most popular and best selling product. Sales of the tech giant’s smartphone offerings now make up over two thirds of its total revenues. The new iPhone 6s looks to continue Apple’s winning streak when it comes to smartphones. But the latest iPhone model will have a high bar to clear -- its predecessor the iPhone 6, which was released last year, only managed to become the best selling Apple device in history.
While it is not clear yet if the iPhone 6s will beat the iPhone 6’s sales, what is more clear is that it will still be a hit (preorder numbers are very strong). And part of what makes iPhones exciting is that Apple never succumbs to the temptation of overloading people with too many iPhones to choose from. Releasing one iPhone model every year appears to be working well for Apple, and the company is surely loath to fix something that is not broken. Also, the schedule of Apple’s annual iPhone launches are always just right, impeccably timed for the final quarter of the year, leading up to the holiday seasons, the time of the year in which people generally buy lots of presents, not only for themselves, but also for family, friends, and loved ones. This year, it is a good bet that the iPhone 6s will make for a wonderful gift for the holidays.
