According to Apple, the Pokemon Go game just became the most downloaded mobile app ever in its first week of release in the history of the App Store. Actually, it took only four days for Pokemon Go to become the number one free mobile app in Apple’s US App Store. This is quite a remarkable achievement considering that the augmented reality game has not even finished rolling out yet across the globe. Indeed, Pokemon Go had initially been deployed in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, and is currently being made available in other regions in Europe and Asia (the phenomenally viral game has just launched in Japan). Although Apple recognized Pokemon Go for its impressive first week record, the company did not provide any specific figure in terms of the number of downloads.
A couple of years more and the App Store will turn a decade old, but it is interesting to note that there are still some mobile app success stories that continue to boggle the mind. Pokemon Go is one such example, and is proof that mobile apps are here to stay, and that some app phenomenons do truly come from nowhere.
And it is interesting to observe that while the appeal of app stores in general have waned, there is still plenty of reason for mobile users to visit them. In the early years of app stores, practically everybody was excited to search and discover new mobile apps. New features of smartphones back then also helped fuel people’s curiosity to try out new apps. But now, every user has pretty much a decent idea of how to take full advantage of their mobile devices, and they now only browse app stores to look for certain apps that are suited to their handset’s capabilities and their preferences and requirements as mobile users.
But Pokemon Go has proven to be a different kind of conquering beast entirely. According to SurveyMonkey, the augmented reality game is achieving retention rates at more than twice the industry average. Moreover, the game is earning at two times the average rate for casual games. On top of that, Pokemon Go has overtaken social media giant Twitter in terms of the daily volume of active users on Android powered devices. There are reports that users are playing Pokemon Go more than they are checking Facebook. This much is clear -- mobile users everywhere can’t seem to get enough out of hunting for Pikachus and Charizards.
