Niantic has recently revealed new characters for its insanely popular mobile game Pokemon Go. Specifically, not only is the game developer adding new creatures from the Pokemon Gold and Silver games, it also unveiling a limited holiday edition of Pikachu. Clad in a cute Santa cap, this special version of Pikachu is made available across the globe, but only until December 29th at 1 PM Eastern.
Other newly added characters include Pichu, Togepi, Igglybuff, Cleffa, Magby, Elekid, and Smoochum. Igglybuff and Cleffa hatch from 2km eggs, while Pichu and Togepi hatch from 5km eggs. As for Magby, Elekid, and Smoochum, they hatch from 10km eggs. Still, those who have played the game know that hatching an egg does not always mean getting a new creature. However, there is a good chance that one might get one of the original 150.
Meanwhile, Niantic also took the opportunity to announce that as of this week, the Pokemon Go mobile game has already started its roll out to India and other South Asian countries, specifically Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The creator of the game also issued an apology to Pokemon fans based in India. Niantic cited a number of administrative challenges that caused delays in the deployment of the game to Indian users. In rolling out Pokemon Go in the Indian market, Niantic also did well in striking a partnership with regional LTE wireless carrier Reliance Jio, which has turned 3,000 of its stores and partner outlets into PokeStops and Gyms.
In other related news, a recent study published by The BMJ stated that the Pokemon Go mobile game has successfully manage to increase the physical activity levels of mobile users between 18 to 35 years old based in the United States. That is cool and all, but the same study also said that within six weeks of first downloading the app, players had reverted back to their physical activity levels before Pokemon.
The study shows that during the first week of playing Pokemon Go, players completed an average of almost a thousand more steps per day compared to the month before they had the mobile installed in their devices. For context, that is akin to 11 more minutes of walking in a period spanning 24 hours.
In gathering information for the study, the research team used 560 very active players and 622 users who had yet to play the game. The researchers discovered that factors such as age, sex, race, body weight, location (urban, suburban, or rural), and walkability of the nearby area did not have a significant effect on the players’ overall activity levels.
