One can argue that as clever as Google’s Project Fi is (read our 2018 review here), it could still use more supported phones. Indeed, the wireless service could definitely do well to add to a current lineup that only includes the Pixel and Pixel 2 smartphones, LG’s Google Nexus 5X, Huawei’s Google Nexus 6P, and Motorola’s Moto X4 (both the standard version and the variant that is powered by Android One). But that should change with Google’s recent revelation that it is adding more handsets to the list, specifically the LG G7 ThinQ flagship, the LG V35 ThinQ, and the Moto G6.
Of course, there is a good reason for the somewhat limited number of supported devices on Project Fi. Because Google’s mobile service offering can switch easily between the networks of US wireless carriers T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular in order to find the connection that offers the best quality at any given time and location, it has to make sure that the any new candidate handset is compatible in all relevant aspects.
LG’s G7 ThinQ and V35 ThinQ devices will be landing on Google’s Project Fi next month, at their normal retail pricing of $749 and $899, respectively. For those looking to preorder any one of the LG smartphones, they might be delighted to know that if they do preorder, Google will give them a $50 credit on their Project Fi account.
By the way, it is okay if you have never heard of the V35 ThinQ. LG, after all, has only unveiled the device today. One can think of this latest LG phone as a sort of upgraded release compared to the G7 ThinQ -- it sports a 6 inch QHD+ organic light emitting diode (OLED) display screen (with support for HDR10), a Snapdragon 845 chip, 6 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM), and 64 gigabytes of built in memory.
Motorola’s Moto G6 is a different story altogether. On Project Fi, the 32 gigabyte edition of the phablet is made available for just $199, which represents a fifty bucks discount on the device’s original $249 price.
Speaking of the Moto G6, Amazon is now selling the device as a Prime Exclusive at a price of $235. Note that the regular pricing of this handset is at $250, but it can be purchased at a discount and unlocked, which means it can be used on any of the networks of Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
In other Motorola related news, there is some talk that the phone maker will soon be releasing the Motorola One Power, which is expected by many to be another Android One device, as reported by Android Headlines. The handset is said to be almost bezel-less, and will sport a front panel notch, plus a vertical twin camera configuration. Interestingly, the device will be using the Motorola brand name (as opposed to the Moto branding), which marks the first this has happened since Chinese tech giant Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility from Google more than three years ago.
