Fresh from allowing journalists to benchmark test its Snapdragon 845 mobile processor, Qualcomm is now introducing its X24 LTE modem, which holds the distinction of being the world’s first ever announced Category 20 LTE modem that comes with support for download speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second (gbps). Not only that, this LTE modem is also the first announced processor manufactured using a ground breaking 7 nanometer FinFET method.
An LTE modem that is capable of 2 gbps download speeds is truly a wonder to behold, considering that the X24’s predecessor, the X20, could only support up to 1.2 gbps download speeds. For those not in the know, the X20 modem is now built into the aforementioned Snapdragon 845 mobile chip, which is expected to feature in almost all upcoming flagship or high end smartphone devices later this year. Come 2019, the X24 will likely start to make its way to high profile smartphone releases, and just imagine what those devices can do with an LTE modem as powerful as the X24.
For those who do not mind the technical stuff, know that the X24 achieves its download speeds by offering support for up to 7x carrier aggregation on the downlink, plus 4 x 4 MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) on up to five aggregated carriers. In terms of uplink, Qualcomm’s X24 comes with support for Category 20 upload speeds, 3 x 20 MegaHertz carrier aggregation (MHz CA). and up to 256 QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation).
According to Qualcomm, it should be able to start demoing the X24 LTE modem live at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event (which will be held in the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain on February 26th until March 1st). The chip maker also mentioned that it will be partnering with Ericsson, Telstra, and Netgear in showcasing the X24’s capabilities.
While Qualcomm and its latest offerings like the X24 play a big part in bringing the 5G era into life, mobile operators will also have an equally important role to play. It is safe to say that the wireless carriers are not there yet, but several have made significant steps in the right direction. And if all their trials go well, consumers can probably expect to start availing of 5G service before the end of this decade. Of course, end users will have to make sure they have the compatible handsets to fully experience 5G. With the X24, Qualcomm has helped ensure that phone makers can get to do their jobs easier.
