According to a recent report published by Nikkei, it appears that Apple has already proceeded to letting its suppliers know that it is moving to cut its production target for its iPhone X by half during the first quarter of 2018. The tech giant was originally aiming to produce 40 million units of one of its 2017 flagship devices for the first three months of this year, but has since reduced that target to just 20 million units.
One week ago, noted KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted that the iPhone X will be discontinued later this year, specifically right around the time Apple debuts its follow ups to last year’s iPhone models. So far, the iPhone X is easily the priciest iPhone that Apple has ever introduced, with a starting price of a thousand dollars. But in past years, the company has been known to reduce the pricing of iPhone models whenever their new successors come along. That might not happen with the iPhone X, with Apple simply deciding to cancel the model altogether, in order to direct consumers’ attention to the upcoming newer next generation iPhone X.
There is no doubt that last year’s iPhone X was a hit -- less than a week ago, Canalys had reported that the iPhone X was the best-selling smartphone during the holiday shopping season. But compared to previous iPhone releases, the iPhone X’s launch was a bit more tricky, so to speak -- some people just found the device to be too expensive (at a starting price of $999), while others were just not convinced enough to decide to upgrade, despite the iPhone X’s groundbreaking Face ID verification technology.
As predicted by Kuo back in November of last year, Apple is looking to release three new iPhone models later this year -- a 5.8 inch model and a 6.5 inch offering that will likely follow the iPhone X’s design and features, and a 6.1 inch iPhone with an LCD screen. In a more recent memo, the analyst stated that with the expected debut of three new iPhone models, Apple may not be releasing a follow up to 2016’s iPhone SE.
Kuo, however, qualified that if ever a new iPhone SE does get released later this year, for sure it will sport a faster chip and a lesser pricing. When the iPhone SE made its debut in March of 2016, it featured the same processor as the iPhone 6s. But the new upgraded model may not feature Face ID, a full screen front side, or wireless charging capabilities.
