Huawei and Xiaomi are two of the largest phone makers in China (and among the top five across the globe), but for all their success in their native homeland, penetrating the United States mobile market remains a challenge. But as recently reported by Bloomberg, both companies apparently have big plans for next year.
Indeed, Huawei and Xiaomi are reportedly in talks with the two industry leading mobile operators in America, namely Verizon Wireless and AT&T, in order to start selling their respective flagship offerings to US mobile users starting in 2018. And while it should be noted that everything is still in the negotiation phase (and quite possibly, nothing might come out of it), this is a major effort by the Chinese mobile brands especially in trying to establish a more solid presence in American shores.
Interestingly, Bloomberg is not the only reporting about this particular development. As a matter of fact, the Associated Press has also broken the news that Huawei is looking to release this year’s Mate 10 phablet in the US in 2018 by way of a yet to be identified American wireless service provider. Huawei is expected to feature heavily at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show, which happens about three weeks from now in the city of Las Vegas in Nevada, and the tech giant might share some more details about its partnership with a US carrier.
While it is true that Chinese brands such as Huawei and Xiaomi are still finding it hard to improve their market share in the US, they have achieved phenomenal success in other parts of the world, that is apart from their home turf China. Yes, Samsung and Apple still remain the industry leaders, but the two actually had a pretty slow first six months this year, effectively allowing Chinese companies to gain some ground. As reported by IHS Markit more than a couple of months ago, eight of the 22 top selling devices during the first half of 2017 were manufactured by Chinese phone makers -- of those eight models, five were from Oppo, two from Xiaomi, and one from Huawei.
Phone makers from China basically got big by promoting their products aggressively locally and in emerging mobile markets such as India. But in the US mobile market, it is a different story altogether. Samsung and Apple have found success by striking lasting relationships with the mobile operators, which still serve as the most reliable distribution partners in America. In other words, Huawei and Xiaomi need to have the US carriers on their side if they have any hope of selling tons of their devices in the country.
