According to a report recently released by Canalys, the iPhone 7, Apple’s flagship offering last year, is the number one smartphone in terms of attaining the largest volume of smartphone shipments during the third quarter of this year across the globe. There were 13 million units of the device shipped around the world during the three month long period ending in September of this year. Overall, global smartphone shipments increased 5.9 percent year over year.
Quite impressively for Apple, the second on Canalys’ list is none other than the tech giant’s iPhone 6s, whose shipments in Q3 2017 number 7.9 million units. Completing the top five are Samsung’s Galaxy J2 Prime on third place with 7.8 million units, and a couple of Oppo handsets on the fourth and fifth spots -- the A57 and the R11.
It may come as a surprise to many that two of this year’s flagship devices from Apple, namely the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus, were not even included in the top five rankings. As reported by Canalys, the two models combined to register 11.8 million units. Interestingly, the bigger iPhone 8 Plus managed to post better shipment numbers than the regular iPhone 8, marking the first time that a larger iPhone model has performed better than its smaller sibling in a given quarter.
For those following iOS related news closely, the underwhelming shipment numbers of the iPhone 8 models may not be completely unexpected. Apple, after all, decided to release three new iPhone models this year (which is quite a departure from its usual two per year quota), and the third model, the iPhone X, is simply viewed by many as the new iPhone to get this year. The iPhone X also had a later launch date (November 3rd) as compared to the iPhone 8 models’ (last September 22nd), which led to buyers holding off on buying an iPhone 8 and instead wait for more than a month to purchase the iPhone X.
As pointed out by Ben Stanton, an analyst from Canalys, shipments of previous iPhone models, like the iPhone SE and the iPhone 6s, actually increased during the third quarter of 2017. The pricing of older iPhones often go down as new models are introduced, and consumers appear to be taking advantage of that. The iPhone 7’s price, for instance, decreased around a couple of months ago, which must have motivated customers to buy the device now.
