According to new information from Counterpoint Research, Verizon Wireless is comfortably leading the industry when it comes to selling the Apple Watch, specifically during the final quarter of last year. In Q4 2017, Apple had managed to sell 2.9 million units of its smartwatch offering in the United States, and an estimated 975,000 of that total volume are from Apple Watch sales completed through the four biggest mobile operators in the country (namely Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint).
Counterpoint Research was also quick to note that mobile operators are rapidly becoming the fastest growing sales channel for the Apple Watch. Based on the research firm’s data, about half of all Apple Watch units have been sold through wireless carriers.
As for the Apple Watch itself, it continues to become the most in-demand smartwatch in the market right now. As pointed out by Jeff Fieldhack, as much as 90 percent of all smartwatch devices sold by mobile operators are Apple Watch models. Perhaps the closest rival to Apple’s smartwatch is Samsung’s Gear3, but the South Korean tech giant’s offering is clearly not as popular as the Apple Watch.
Wearable devices in general are continuing to gain some traction among today’s mobile users. During Verizon Wireless’ recent quarterly earnings call with analysts, the Big Red made special mention of wearables as a growing market. According to Matt Ellis, the chief financial officer of Verizon, the number one wireless service provider in the United States has managed to register gains of 550,000 connected devices among its postpaid account holders, and a big majority of those connected devices are wearables.
Much has been written about the Apple Watch’s role in making people become more aware of the existence and capabilities of smartwatch devices. Indeed, the really great thing about Apple’s smartwatch is that it does not only look cool, but it actually delivers in terms of features and functionalities. On top of that, the Apple Watch has accomplished leaps when it comes to innovation, particularly through the relatively recent release of the Apple Watch Series 3, which comes with cellular connectivity. And it seems that Apple Watch buyers are really taking full advantage of that connectivity -- fresh data presented by Wave7 Research indicated that 30 out of 37 carrier retail store reps it had polled were claiming that smartwatch buyers do not mind paying monthly to enjoy cellular connectivity on their connected devices, including smartwatches.
