Quickly countering the latest announcement from Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile has revealed that it is now adding HD video to its unlimited plan. Specifically, the third biggest wireless carrier in the United States has added HD video and 10 gigabytes of high speed hotspot data to its T-Mobile One unlimited plan, which normally costs $70 per month. For good measure, the major US wireless carrier also took the opportunity to launch a deal that offers a couple of lines of T-Mobile One service for just $100 per month, basically allowing subscribers a $20 discount on the usual pricing.
For those not familiar with Verizon Wireless’ most recent move, the Big Red has just introduced (or more accurately, re-introduced) an unlimited data plan (Verizon Unlimited) that is priced at $80 per month. For the longest time, the number one mobile operator in America had veered away from offering unlimited data plans. But two months into the year, the carrier has finally gave in -- launching a new plan that comes with HD video and 10 gigabytes of LTE hotspot access -- and in the process, compelling T-Mobile to make a lightning fast response.
It makes sense for T-Mobile to act quickly. After all, before its announcement, its unlimited data plan had only offered video streaming limited to 480p and zero tethering. Via a press release, John Legere, the ever outspoken chief executive officer of T-Mobile, stated that the Big Red was bound to give in eventually -- having just lost its network advantage. Legere added that the next step is to get Verizon to include monthly taxes and fees.
While it is true that the Big Four carriers in America (Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint) constantly try to outdo each other, the first couple of months of 2017 has already seen increased competition from most of the players. For instance, just a few days ago, Sprint had launched a deal that offered 5 lines of unlimited data for $90 a month. This week, Verizon then made its move, which prompted a quick response from T-Mobile.
But for industry watchers, perhaps a more curious aspect of this whole unlimited narrative is how these major wireless carriers (or even the wireless industry as a whole) will deal with the sudden increase of network traffic that is sure to result from the new HD video and unlimited data deals being offered. We will all find out in the next few months.
