Mobile virtual network operator ROK Mobile may have found a way to effectively marry wireless plans with life insurance. Over the past years, the MVNO (using the LTE networks of T-Mobile and Sprint) has built quite a reputation for combining the perks of a mobile plan with a music streaming service. But it was back in 2016 when the carrier started to incorporate accidental death insurance and even online medical access to its $49.99 offering.
In 2017, ROK Mobile has now decided to break out these insurance related benefits into four separate plans (starting at $5 per month), each offering insurance inclusions under a budget friendly rate. Take the $10 plan, for instance -- it already comes with Wi-Fi calling, as well as roadside assistance, $20,000 worth of burial insurance, and $100,000 of accidental death insurance.
With each upgraded tier, inclusions from the previous plan are added and combined with new inclusions. For example, the Premium Plan (which costs $15) comes with all the benefits mentioned earlier, and on top of that, also has family legal services, pharmacy savings, ID theft insurance, and telemedicine.
Those not familiar with ROK Mobile may have a hard time wrapping their heads around the carrier’s generosity. But it is good noting that the MVNO is co-directed by John Paul DeJoria, who also co-founded both John Paul hair care and the Patron liquor brand. Although DeJoria is worth an estimated $3.2 billion, he has elected to pledge around half of his wealth to charity.
That being said, ROK Mobile feels like a natural extension of DeJoria’s interests, especially in the way the MVNO caters to those who can not always afford high cost wireless plans. But how does the carrier bundle so much services in one plan without going broke? According to DeJoria, the key is in operating in a large scale, which essentially allows ROK Mobile to continue to offer cheap rates, or at least, cheaper compared to what is out there.
Quite interestingly, customers can not buy any handset from ROK Mobile -- only mobile plans that come with SIM cards. Moreover, its most well known offering, the $49.99 plan, is the only option that offers data (5 gigabytes of 4G LTE). Of course, it also includes unlimited voice calls and text messaging and zero ad music streaming access to 20 million songs (by way of the ROK Music mobile app), roadside assistance, $100,000 of accidental death assistance, up to $20,000 of burial and cremation insurance, family legal services, ID theft insurance, pharmacy savings, and telemedicine.
