Mobile virtual network operator ROK Mobile just recently revealed that it was launching its Veterans Helping Veterans (#Vets2Vets) project, wherein the mobile operator will be providing wireless and telemedicine services, free of charge, to an estimated 50,000 homeless veterans across the United States. According to the MVNO, the project consists of a couple of stages, and will kick off with the pilot launch happening next month that will see the company give away free wireless services to the more than a thousand homeless veterans in the Greater Los Angeles area.
This announcement comes after the release of tycoon John Paul DeJoria’s recent documentary Good Fortune, which tells the billionaire’s journey from a homeless veteran to becoming the founder of Paul Mitchell Systems, Patron Tequila, and ROK Mobile. Much of Paul DeJoria’s entrepreneurial efforts have been spurred by his philanthropic drive, which often involves giving away the fortune he made and donating it to those who could use a hand.
As mentioned earlier, the pilot program of the Veterans Helping Veterans project will be starting in August of this year. Initially, the project will be serving about 1,200 veterans in the Greater Los Angeles area. By the final quarter of this year, ROK Mobile is looking to have the initiative up and running on a countrywide scale.
The set up of the campaign is pretty straightforward -- for every couple of veterans who decide to move their wireless service to ROK Mobile, the carrier will donate a free wireless service to a homeless veteran, on top of a life benefit package that comes with 24/7 telemedicine, plus a discount prescription deal. The free wireless service, as well as the life benefit package, will be provided free of charge for as long as veterans donate to the Veterans Helping Veterans project. To summarize, the free mobile plan from ROK Mobile will feature the following:
Voice calls and text messaging service
Access to 24/7 telemedicine
Discount pharmacy plan
Of course, of paramount concern is achieving sustainability for the program. To achieve this, ROK Mobile is looking to take full advantage of a give back initiative by giving away a portion of every new American veteran customer’s monthly bill. The donated money will then be funneled into an account that will cover for all existing services to homeless veterans, and also support the program’s expansion effort across America. This way, homeless veterans can rest assured that their free prepaid mobile plans will not be cut off in the long run.
