According to analytics firm NPD Group, sales of backup batteries for mobile devices have picked up in the two weeks that spanned July 10th until July 23rd of this year. That was also right around the time that the Pokemon Go mobile game was rolled out to the masses. Coincidence? Not likely, and backup battery makers can thank weirdly named little monsters (and their crazed hunters) for that.
Demand for handset batteries has been high overall so far in 2016. As a matter of fact, NPD estimates that unit sales of backup batteries are up 35 percent year over year as of June of this year. But from July 10 to July 23, there was a whopping 101 percent spike in sales across the portable power pack segment, compared to the numbers for the same period during the previous year. Total sales during that two week period were at nearly 1.2 million units.
Of course, one must credit the backup battery makers themselves too, for taking full advantage of this whole Pokemon Go craze. Over the past few weeks, more than one manufacturer was riding the phenomenal success of the augmented reality game by highlighting the advantages of having a reliable backup battery when you are out there on the streets looking for Pikachu. Some brands have even introduced discounts for their products.
Once again, here is another proof that the Pokemon Game is creating ripples not only in the app ecosystem. Wireless carriers such as Sprint and Boost Mobile have already begun deploying Pokemon Go experts in their respective outlets in order to attract Pokemon loving prospective customers. T-Mobile has even stated that its customers can enjoy one whole year of free data while playing the highly addictive mobile game. Various companies have introduced smartphone cases that actually help players improve their Pokemon hunting skills -- just check out the Pokeball Aimer. And very recently, Komodo OpenLab, a Canadian company, is offering its Tecla product, an assistive device that makes it easier for people who are wheelchair users or those afflicted with multiple sclerosis to operate their mobile devices easier in trying to catch Pokemon.
Many are saying that Pokemon Go is now the most successful mobile game in history. The numbers certainly support this. There are reports that the game is posting retention rates at more than twice the industry average, and that it is racking up revenues at twice the average rate for casual games. Apple has already proclaimed it as the most downloaded app in its first week in the App Store ever.
