According to Samsung, its newest flagship devices -- the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus -- have already attracted a larger number of preorders compared to last year’s flagship offerings, the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge. The South Korean tech giant went on to reveal that this year’s flagships are registering double digit growth when matched up with the number of preorders from February 2016, when their predecessors were first released.
Much has already been written about Samsung’s shiny new toys, particularly with its features and functionalities, including the South Korean phone maker’s very own digital assistant Bixby. The company is also hoping that the decision to incorporate a couple of curved edges to the phablets will pay off, especially in drawing buyers. Moreover, Samsung has also introduced special perks for the first ones to preorder the devices, offering a free Gear VR (2017 edition), controller, and an Oculus game pack, for good measure. For those who missed the news, preorders for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus devices are already accepted since March 30th, with the handsets hitting store shelves this coming April 21st. The Galaxy S8 has a starting price of $750, while the Galaxy S8 Plus costs $850. As of this writing, the most number of preorders are for the midnight black edition of the Galaxy S8 Plus.
A few days ago, Samsung has stated that it is looking to generate a profit of $8.7 billion during the first three months of this year, effectively recording its larger first quarter profit ever, and posting a 48 percent improvement year over year. As for revenues, they are projected to be at $44 billion, a yearly increase of 0.44 percent.
So far, the South Korean mobile manufacturer’s strong showing is due to its solid components business. During the final quarter of last year, Samsung managed to see its profits increase 50 percent, mainly buoyed by the solid sales of its processors, display panels, and other components. Also, back in February early this year, the company was reported to have struck a $4.3 billion deal in order to become Apple’s supplier of LED display screens for the next iPhone devices.
But there is more work to be done for Samsung. Because of the Galaxy Note 7 disaster, Samsung saw its title as the world’s biggest smartphone vendor snatched away by Apple during the last quarter of 2016. But as long as Samsung does not encounter another major stumble this year, the company should be able to recapture its title in the next few months.
