The biggest seller of smartphones in the world is quite fond of releasing special edition variants of its flagship devices. For instance, back in May of last year, Samsung decided to launch a special Iron Man edition of its Galaxy S6 Edge handset, one of its flagship offerings at that time, in light of the recent release of the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron. And in May of this year, the South Korean tech giant also took the opportunity to debut the Galaxy S7 Edge Injustice Edition, a Batman inspired smartphone released in commemoration of the third anniversary of the phenomenally popular Injustice: Gods Among Us game.
This time around, Samsung appears to be planning to launch a special edition of its Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone inspired by the 2016 Olympic Games. The company happens to be one of the global sponsors of the 31st Summer Olympics to be held in the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and it would make sense for the South Korean phone maker to honor the games with a limited edition variant of one of its current flagship device.
Leaked images of the 2016 Olympics edition of the Galaxy S7 Edge have already surfaced in the interwebs, courtesy of frequent leaker Evan Blass. The device is rendered in black, but appears to be accented with detailed flourishes, and of course, the very familiar interlocking five ring symbol of the Olympic Games.
Colors such as blue, yellow, red, and green (commonly used on the Olympic rings) are incorporated subtly on the handset. For instance, the outline of the home button and earpiece grille is colored yellow, the power button on the right side section is colored red, the volume buttons on the left side section are colored green, and the camera on the rear side is colored blue.
Because this Galaxy S7 Edge is launched to celebrate the Olympic games, Olympic themes and colors will obviously feature heavily in wallpapers, themes, and other areas of the user interface. As for the hardware specifications, one can expect the device to pretty much stick to the regular features of the Galaxy S7 Edge.
Last May’s Galaxy S7 Edge Injustice Edition came bundled with Samsung’s Gear VR headset, and it is not made clear yet if the Galaxy S7 Edge 2016 Olympics Edition will have the same treatment. But since the Olympics is a big thing, one can expect some exclusive giveaways when the device is launched.
Samsung has not made any official announcements yet regarding pricing and availability for the Olympic edition of the Galaxy S7 Edge, but with the opening ceremony of the Olympics fast approaching, we should be able to get some details soon.
