Two of the biggest names in the smartphone industry are investing significantly in OLED display screens in order to win new orders for Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 8. Combined, Samsung and LG are investing about $11.3 billion in flexible OLEDs, as reported by Business Korea. As for the former, it has revealed that it has a recent investment in the amount of $4.37 billion, and adding the other investments it made earlier in 2016, it would total $9.7 billion. As for LG, it is looking to invest around $3.9 billion in display screens, with roughly half of that amount dedicated to OLED displays.
Interestingly, Apple has not previously used OLED display screens for its iPhones and iPad devices, preferring instead to be content with continuously enhancing the LCD displays on its mobile handsets. But rumors that surfaced in the last few months seem to suggest that the tech giant is seriously considering going for an OLED display for its iPhone offering next year. Most of the talk has been speculation, but seeing that Samsung and LG are investing heavily more than ever in OLEDs, there may be some truth to the rumors after all.
If Apple does decide to equip its upcoming iPhone 8 with an OLED display screen, it would certainly be a wise decision. OLED displays pose several advantages over LCD displays, including better power efficiency, more vibrant color renders, and a slimness that allows space for other smartphone components. However, OLED display screens also come with cons. They are generally considered to be more costly to build, and a number of phone makers have already observed that over time, the color saturation of OLED displays seem to degrade a bit.
Still, there is no doubt that many people will still be looking forward to purchase the first OLED display iPhone ever next year. Furthermore, 2017 happens to be the year in which the iPhone will turn 10 years old. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Apple will almost certainly release an iPhone that features a major redesign, and a generous array of never before seen features and functionalities.
It is also worth noting that Apple is as determined as ever to rejuvenate its ailing sales. For the first time in its smartphone business, the company suffered its first ever year of declining sales. Quite obviously, Apple would be pulling out all the stops next year in order to make people get excited about a new iPhone device again.
