After teasing its upcoming smartwatch almost a couple of weeks ago during a major conference event held in New York City, Samsung is officially unveiling its new Gear S2 smartwatch. The South Korean tech giant’s latest wearable device offering was actually briefly demoed at its Samsung Unpacked event last August 13th, and was widely expected to make its official debut at this year’s IFA trade show happening in Berlin, Germany. However, Samsung decided to formally announce its newest wearable device one day ahead of IFA’s traditional press day.
The announcement of the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch may not come with details regarding pricing, release date, and availability yet, but it does provide confirmation on the hardware components and software features of Samsung’s latest Gear wearable device. Also, it should be noted that the Gear S2 is basically offered in two editions -- the standard model, and the classic model.
Interestingly for a mobile manufacturer known primarily for sticking to the Android mobile operating system, Samsung has elected to use its own OS, Tizen, instead of making use of Android Wear, the system that Google specifically developed and designed for wearable devices (and recently made compatible with iPhones). But anybody who is familiar with Samsung’s line of smartwatches may not be too surprised with the choice for OS. Of the seven smartwatches that Samsung has debuted so far (including the Gear S2), only the Gear Live smartwatch is powered by Android Wear.
Like many smartwatches currently available in the market, the Samsung Gear S2 is equipped with the standard set of sensors, which include a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and an optical heart rate monitor. These personal fitness related features are complemented with Samsung’s S Health platform, which is pre-installed on the wearable device, as is Nike+.
Hardware wise, the Samsung Gear S2 is equipped with a round shaped watch face (a clear departure from the rectangular shaped watch face sported by its predecessor, the Gear S) that is equipped with a 1.2 inch Super AMOLED display screen, with a resolution of 360 by 360 pixels. The device features a nifty rotating bezel which, along with the Home and Back buttons, should allow users to quickly and easily access alerts and apps. The Gear S2 boasts a 1 GigaHertz twin core chip, and also has Wi-Fi, near field communications (NFC), and Bluetooth connectivity. Samsung is planning to offer a 3G version of the smartwatch that comes with the first ever eSIM with voice capability.
The standard Gear S2 will be made available in either dark gray colors or silver (with white band). As for the Gear S2 classic, it will be available in black with leather band.
