Flip phones became a hit several years ago, and now the world’s biggest smartphone vendor is thinking of updating the concept of a flip phone, but with never before seen mobile technology. Samsung recently published a patent that comes with a few renders of a mobile device that is capable of completely folding down its middle section.
Over the last few months, there has been talk that the South Korean tech giant was indeed planning on releasing bendable or foldable handsets soon, probably even by next year. It has not been made clear yet if the recent patent Samsung published is directly tied those plans. But it is a good bet that the phone maker may make use of the exact or similar technology.
Needless to say, a foldable design for a modern smartphone leads to many interesting possibilities. For starters, a foldable smartphone is much easier to carry, and will almost certainly fit better in most pockets, bags, or compartments. Moreover, the curved or bendable design allows the device to fit the user’s cheek more comfortably, especially when the person is making or taking phone calls.
Among the most popular phone maker brands in the world right now, Samsung appears to have shown the most interest in exploring flexible or irregular display screens for smartphone devices. The most obvious example perhaps is the tech giant’s Galaxy Edge lineup of handsets. But its next generation of display screens are truly special, due to the fact that users can manipulate them by folding or bending them. Interestingly, Samsung had a patent a year ago that featured design ideas not only for foldable handsets, but also devices that can be rolled up.
But before we get too ahead of ourselves, it is worth noting the many hurdles that Samsung has to clear in order to bring its vision of foldable smartphones into reality. Quite simply, having a folding device also means that the insides of that device also fold with the rest of the body. You can probably arrange internal components properly, but bending the phone’s battery will be a bit more challenging, to say the least.
These hurdles aside, the more important question for end users is -- when can they expect to actually purchase a foldable Samsung device? The company is not telling yet, most likely because they need to be working on building the thing in the first place (and making sure it doesn’t, you know, go Galaxy Note 7).
