It has not been a good week for the biggest seller of smartphones in the world. Samsung has recently announced that because of issues in the battery used for its newest phablet, the Galaxy Note 7, the South Korean tech giant is halting all sales of the device across the globe, and is officially recalling all units sold since the handset’s launch back in August 19. Moreover, the company is launching an exchange program for users who purchased the phablet.
As early as next week, those who bought the Galaxy Note 7 will be able to either trade their existing unit for a new one, or choose to exchange it for any one of Samsung’s current flagship devices, the Galaxy S7 or the Galaxy S7 Edge. For those who opt to exchange for a Galaxy S7 handset, they can expect to get a refund of the price difference. Lastly, any customer who decides to exchange his Galaxy Note 7 will be getting either a $25 gift or a bill credit from selected wireless carriers.
The Galaxy Note 7 has only been made available in store shelves around the world for about a couple of weeks, but it has proven to be a hit already. Samsung had recently revealed that around 2.5 million units of the phablet have already been shipped around the world. It is really quite unfortunate that the company had to recall the product just as it was gaining some major momentum.
There is a reason for that, of course. To date, Samsung had already received more than 30 separate cases of defective battery problems being reported. On social media, users have been posting pictures of burned Galaxy Note 7 units, with people claiming that their device overheated and even exploded. The company is now trying to coordinate with its roster of suppliers in order to remove the devices with defective batteries from the market.
Obviously, Samsung does not need all of this. The mobile manufacturer had hoped to enjoy continuing sales in the days before its biggest rival, Apple, was set to unveil its latest iPhone offering this coming September 7th. It is such a shame because Samsung had created quite a streak in the last few months, beginning with the launch of its Galaxy S7 devices. The strategic timing of subsequent releases like the Galaxy Note 7 and the recently announced Gear S3 smartwatch would have given Samsung an opportunity to prolong its momentum.
