Back in September earlier this year just days before Apple was about to officially launch its newest iPhone models (the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus), the tech giant revealed that the jet black colored editions of the iPhone 7 had sold out. It is quite possible that its long time rival Samsung may have picked up on that idea, because there is talk that the South Korean mobile manufacturer is preparing to release a glossy black edition of its own flagship device, the Galaxy S7, just time for the busy holiday shopping season.
This bit of news was first reported recently this week by South Korean news source The Investor. A Chinese Samsung Weibo account has since posted images of what appears to be the Galaxy S7 Edge sporting the glossy black color. So far, Samsung has yet to officially confirm if it is indeed planning to launch a glossy black Galaxy S7 soon, but the leaked images should give excited Android fans an idea of what this particular variant looks like for the meantime.
The new glossy black color option may actually remind people of the onyx black color option used in past Galaxy mobile devices. Perhaps the biggest difference however is that the glossy black color comes with an super shiny black rear plate. But mobile users should beware -- like Apple’s jet black color offering, Samsung’s glossy black looks really cool and all, but it could also easily accumulate smudges, fingerprint marks, and even scratches. Still, it is hard to argue about the look, so if prospective buyers take extra care in handling this edition, then there should not be a major problem.
It appears that Samsung has been busy exploring alternative color options for its flagship devices. Some may remember that more than three weeks ago, news broke out that the South Korean phone maker was planning on launching a coral blue edition of its Galaxy S7 Edge handset. This particular edition has since averaged 15,000 units of sales every day since it was released last November 11th, according to The Investor.
Has the recent Galaxy Note 7mess have anything to do with Samsung’s aggressive efforts to launch new editions of its devices? Possibly, considering the losses the company has sustained due to the phablet’s unfortunate recall. But it could also be a case of just delivering something new in time for the holidays. Like any phone maker, Samsung is looking to sell a lot of devices during winter, and the new glossy black Galaxy S7 might just be business as usual for the world’s biggest seller of smartphones.
