Makers of Android powered devices are often criticized for taking so long to update their products with the latest version of Google’s Android mobile operating system. The biggest phone maker of them all, Samsung, is no exception to this. But the South Korean mobile giant is working to change all that by announcing that its latest phablet, the Galaxy Note 7, will get Android 7.0 Nougat before the end of this year.
As reported by the Korea Times, Koh Dongjin, President of Samsung Mobile, revealed that the company is planning to update its devices with Android Nougat within the next two or three months. Less than five months remain before the year is over, and if Samsung makes good on its promise, it would be a new record for the South Korean phone maker in how quick it can updates its mobile devices. Still, in all likelihood, not all handsets from Samsung will get the update at the same time. Unlocked devices usually get updates sooner. Moreover, they do not need to go through wireless carrier testing like other most other smartphone devices out in the United States mobile market.
The Galaxy Note 7 will hit store shelves in the US this coming August 19th. As confirmed by Koh, Samsung will be releasing an edition of the Galaxy Note 7 that comes with 128 gigabytes of built in memory in the Chinese mobile market.
In related news, Samsung has started sending out invitations for a press conference to be held in the city of Berlin in Germany on September 1st of this year. Note that in the same city, the annual Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) Trade Show will also be happening, specifically from September 2nd until September 7th.
Because its teaser invite features a clock graphic, various industry watchers have speculated that Samsung is planning to officially unveil its newest smartwatch offering on that date. For several months now, there have been rumors circulating that Samsung will be introducing a follow up to its Gear S2 wearable device soon. And based on the fact that the Gear S2 was unveiled last year also during the IFA trade show in Berlin, it is a good bet that this year, the Gear S3 will debut in this year’s IFA, too.
Furthermore, the September 1 schedule would let Samsung introduce its newest smartwatch offering ahead of its rival Apple’s upcoming Apple Watch 2 smartwatch, which might debut just days after the Gear S3’s unveiling.
