Samsung has officially distributed invitations for its Unpacked launch event happening on February 21st of this year, one day before the 2016 Mobile World Congress to be held in the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain. This will mark the third time that the South Korean tech giant is announcing a new flagship device ahead of or during the Mobile World Congress. But this year’s unveiling promises to be more exciting for Samsung fans for a number of reasons.
For one, there has been talk that this year, Samsung will be announcing not one flagship device, but at least a couple, and rumors even abound that there may possibly be three new Galaxy S7 models to be introduced less than a month from now. Apart from the regular flat Galaxy S7 and its curvy sibling, the Galaxy S7 Edge, could the South Korean phone maker also be readying to debut a bigger Galaxy S7 Edge+?
Samsung’s recent struggles in its profit margins and dwindling market share are well documented, and it is no secret that the company needs a hit badly in order to get back to its dominating ways. It is true that the South Korean mobile manufacturer is still the number one seller of smartphones in the whole world right now, but increasing competition courtesy of Chinese phone maker upstarts such as Huawei and Xiaomi are threatening to further erode Samsung’s dominance.
In this year’s upcoming Mobile World Congress, Samsung is expected to deal with some competition. For instance, it appears that LG is also cooking up something new, having already released a teaser invitation for an event in Barcelona on February 21st. Industry watchers and Android die hard fans are expecting to see a new LG G5 smartphone (with a radical new design) unveiled, and possibly other new mobile devices from LG as well. Samsung also has a teaser invitation to boast, and it comes in the form of a video, which shows a guy using what appears to be the company’s Gear VR headset.
Everybody agrees that Samsung’s Galaxy S6 devices are some of the best smartphones the tech giant has released in years. However, as it continues to manufacture a legitimate comeback, the company will have to really deliver with the upcoming Galaxy S7, and hopefully get consumers to purchase the smartphone(s). Based on leaks and rumors, the Galaxy S7 promises a lot of cool new features, including improved processing performance, and a pressure sensitive display screen (ala the 3D Touch tech used in Apple’s iPhone 6s devices). Will this new feature and other cool stuff be enough to convince people to buy the device? We will find out in the months to come.
