The wait is over -- Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone offerings, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, have officially launched in the United States, as well as in three other initial mobile markets, namely Canada, Puerto Rico, and of course, South Korea. The phone maker stated that in the new few weeks, the two phablets should also launch in other regions around the world.
To refresh everyone’s memory, the Galaxy S8 comes with a 5.8 inch display and a starting price of $725, while the bigger Galaxy S8 Plus sports a 6.2 inch display and a starting price of $825. Other notable features include a bezel-less Infinity screen, a top notch chip set from Qualcomm, and very impressive camera specifications (dual camera configuration on the rear side) that all prove Samsung to still be a world class Android phone maker. However, both phablets for now will not be shipping with the South Korean tech giant’s own artificial intelligence driven digital assistant, Bixby. According to the company, the software feature will be rolling out to the Galaxy S8 models by way of an update scheduled for deployment in spring of this year.
So far, initial sales numbers have been quite encouraging for Samsung -- as a matter of fact, ZDNet has recently reported that the phone maker has already sold a million preorders in its home country alone, which is a new record for the company. Moreover, various industry watchers fully expect worldwide unit sales of the two newest additions to the Galaxy lineup of smartphones to breach 45 million. It bears noting that last year’s flagship devices -- the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge -- shipped approximately 48 million units across the globe. With momentum sure to be generated by the release of the new Galaxy S8 models, as well as continued solid sales from its chip making business, Samsung is projected to register a 50 percent year on year increase in profits (the company will be publishing its quarterly earnings report later this month).
It is hard to see Samsung’s Galaxy S8 devices not becoming global hits, but the timing of the release of the handsets is rather intriguing -- the worldwide market for smartphones has slowed down a bit in the last few quarters, with mobile users appearing to be less enthusiastic about purchasing newer models, especially when compared to years before. Still, various analysts fully believe that the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will help immensely in inspiring innovation in the world of mobile this year.
