Samsung is clearly hoping to grab away some of the customers of its rival Apple, particularly those who own iPhone devices. The South Korean mobile giant is hatching a new plan that will entice iPhone owners to switch allegiances to Samsung and specifically go for the Android phone maker’s newest phablets. This is made possible through a free 30 day trial special offer, which is launching just as Samsung’s latest phablets are hitting major wireless carriers in the United States.
Samsung’s new promotion is only open to owners of iPhones. Costing only $1, the offer basically allows mobile users to try either the new Galaxy Note 5, the curvy Galaxy S6 Edge+, or the current Galaxy S6 Edge for a period of 30 days with zero obligation. Consumers will be given any one of the three phablets as well as an activated SIM card for their wireless carrier of choice, plus a detailed guide on how to set up the trial handset. When the 30 day period is over, customers can either choose to give back the handset, or decide to upgrade. This free trial is made available for subscribers of Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that Samsung has tried to introduced a test drive special offer. As a matter of fact, it launched a similar one a year ago, although compared to this year’s, last year’s promo was more limited and pricey -- people were required to make a deposit of $350 for the Galaxy S5 or Galaxy Note 3. Moreover, the trial was only made available for a period of 21 days, and only open in specific areas that include Dallas and Houston in Texas, Los Angeles and Santa Clara in California, and in Manhattan, New York.
The newest promo from Samsung should be more enticing for a number of reasons. First is the $1 pricing, and also, customers get to try a couple of very new devices, the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+, which were announced during an Unpacked event more than a week ago. In the past, Samsung normally unveiled its new phablets on a September, but this year, the company is moving release date earlier in order to get ahead of the expected introduction of Apple’s new iPhone (the iPhone 6S).
Samsung really needs to rejuvenate its sales. Sure, the South Korean tech giant is still the leader in the global smartphone market, but during the past quarters, the company has been steadily posting decreasing sales figures and shrinking market share. This newest promo should try to help in addressing that, and at the same time, serve as a direct counter offensive, or maybe even a preemptive strike on Apple.
