Weeks ago, Samsung had revealed that the Galaxy Alpha was intended to be the first device in the South Korean phone maker's upcoming A series of handsets. This soon-to-be-launched new generation of smartphones is expected to have new features, and some of them are already highlighted in the Galaxy Alpha, which was released just last month in August.
It was reported that the new A series of smartphones would comprise (initially) of three new devices: the SM-A300, the SM A500, and the SM A-700. Among the three, the SM-A500 is expected to be the next device to be launched by Samsung. And perhaps buoyed by anticipation for the smartphone's official release, sources have come forward providing information about the device's specifications.
Chief among these purported specs is the device's full metal body, which the Galaxy Alpha also sported. As Samsung fans no doubt have noticed, the South Korea-based mobile manufacturer has always had a fondness for making plastic-clad mobile devices. But with the Galaxy Alpha's released, it appears that the mobile giant is shifting to, or at least exploring the idea of metal-clad handsets in its future offerings.
The SM-A500 may be proof of that. Of course, apart from its metal body, there are a lot more that fans can look forward to. Its display screen for one -- the SM-A500 will feature a 5-inch HD 1280 by 720p resolution super AMOLED display screen. As for its camera, the phone boasts an 8-megapixel rear camera as well as a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.
As for the hardware specs, the SM-A500 packs a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 16 gigabytes of internal storage, a 2330 mAh battery, and a microSD slot, something which the Galaxy Alpha lacks.
Although the SM-A500 will feature the Ultra Power Saving Mode (just like the Galaxy S5), it will not have fingerprint or heart rate sensors. Also, it will not be dust- or water-resistant.
The upcoming release of the SM-A500 may be a clear-cut effort by Samsung to introduce a mid-range device with impressive hardware specs. The company is hardly the first to do it -- Chinese phone makers have been producing low-cost but feature-heavy handsets for years. But with the SM-A500, Samsung is no doubt letting other phone makers know that they too can play that game.
