Xiaomi is said to be readying to officially unveil its new Mi 5s smartphone some time later this year. This flagship device from the Chinese phone maker is expected to come with lots of new features, which include a pressure sensitive display screen as well as an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. Well, there is some new speculation that Xiaomi’s Mi 5s device will also be fitted with dual cameras on its rear side. And as reported by KoreaHerald, it appears that the smartphone will be making use of dual camera modules supplied by none other than Samsung, the biggest mobile giant in the world right now.
KoreaHerald’s report cites several anonymous sources from the mobile industry, and the talk is that Xiaomi will not be the only phone maker getting dual camera modules from Samsung. It is also rumored that the South Korean tech firm will also provide dual camera modules to another Chinese phone maker, LeEco. If this report turns out to be true, then this will mark the first time ever that Samsung has decided to supply dual camera modules to phone makers based in China. The dual camera modules will reportedly begin shipping to Xiaomi and LeEco in the early part of July later this year.
Not many people know this, but Xiaomi has been importing single camera modules from Samsung for some time now. As for the new dual camera approach to its mobile devices, it is quite possible that the Chinese mobile company will start doing for its upcoming Mi 5s smartphone. There are even rumors that yet another Chinese tech firm, Oppo, will be getting supplied with dual camera modules by Samsung. During the first three months of this year, Oppo nabbed the title of the fourth biggest seller of smartphone devices in the whole world, selling 18.5 million units of its devices.
Are we entering a new era of dual camera smartphones? There are industry watchers who think so. The signs are certainly there, or more accurately, the rumors are all there. In March early this year for instance, leaked images of the iPhone 7 Plus surfaced in the Internet, suggesting that at least one of Apple’s upcoming new iPhone models will feature a dual camera configuration. If Apple is into this dual camera thing, it is a good bet that many others will follow, especially Chinese phone makers who introduce tons of new handsets every quarter to China, considered the biggest market for mobile phones in the world today.
