One week ago, Samsung held a major conference in New York City, officially announcing its two newest phablets -- the Galaxy Note 5 and the curvy Galaxy S6 Edge+. During this event, the South Korean mobile giant also managed to tease its new upcoming wearable device, the Samsung Gear S2. To the delightful surprise of everyone, the newest smartwatch appeared to be a major upgrade over its predecessor, the Samsung Gear S, at least in looks.
Now, Samsung has just released a short 30 second long teaser video from the conference via the company’s official YouTube channel. As far as teasers go, this one is pretty concise, but it did hint that more information about the new smartwatch will be made public at its upcoming IFA press conference scheduled to happen at the start of September this year.
As seen on the short teaser video, Samsung has opted to adapt a round casing and a metal band for the Gear S2 smartwatch. Also seen briefly are a number of mobile apps obviously optimized for use on the Samsung smartwatch, including a weather mobile, a time zone mobile app, a stopwatch mobile app, and a sports tracker mobile app. The Samsung Gear S2 wearable device also appears to be equipped with a heart rate sensor. All of these information are displayed on the watch face, as well as short alerts and notifications.
As mentioned earlier, the Gear S2 looks so differently compared to the original Gear S. Whereas as its predecessor could fit a small onscreen QWERTY keyboard on its watch face, the Gear S2’s round face may not offer enough space for this type of inputting device. Samsung has also visibly gone for rounded icons this time. Interestingly, the Apple Watch also made good use of rounded icons.
It is not certain yet if the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch runs on an intricately customized version of Android Wear or on Tizen, the South Korean tech giant’s own operating system. Moreover, it is hard to tell from the teaser video just how big the upcoming wearable device is. Mobile users, of course, are hoping that it will not be as bulky and cumbersome as the Gear S smartwatch.
The official launch date for the Samsung Gear S2 will likely be September 3rd of this year, during the upcoming IFA conference to be held in Berlin, Germany. In past years, Samsung had unveiled some of its most notable new devices during this annual tech conference.
