After a series of delays, Samsung has finally rolled out the much awaited Bixby Voice smart assistant service to its users based in the United States. On a press release, the South Korean phone manufacturer unveiled the release. The company also announced that Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus device users can expect to receive an update, which already includes the service.
On its release, Samsung iterated that Bixby Voice is not "a voice assistant" and that it should not be compared to Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, or Google's Assistant. The company shared that Bixby Voice is more than these things as it "is an intelligent interface that will change the way you interact" with your phone. Instead, Samsung promises that its new service will let you do almost everything with your voice as you would when you are tapping or typing on your device.
For example, you can let Bixby Voice do certain commands such as remind you to do a specific activity later on in the day or browse through photos from a recent vacation. You can even ask Bixby to scroll through several layers in your menu in one simple action even if your phone is locked. Bixby Voice allows you to toggle settings and set short customized commands instead of long specific steps. And while you can launch Bixby Voice by saying "Hey Bixby" or "Hi Bixby,” there is also the option of using the dedicated Bixby button found on the side of Galaxy S8 devices.
Right now, Bixby Voice is available to Galaxy S8 users in the US and in South Korea. Samsung has not divulged when they plan to make Bixby understand more than just American English and make it available to the other countries speaking UK English. But for now, today's update makes it an exciting time for Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus users since they can already start using their device for Bixby Voice. Not to mention, they finally have a use for the dedicated Bixby button found on their devices. After three months since the S8 was launched, they can finally press the button on the side of their phone and start using Samsung's smart assistant service.
Other than today's update on Bixby Voice, Samsung still has not revealed more information on the rumors on them working on a Bixby powered speaker. They do have plans on making Bixby available on its TVs, washing machines, and refrigerators. Unfortunately, there is no word on when this will be available to the public.
