When ZTE introduced its Axon 7 smartphone back in May earlier this year, many found the device an unexpected delight, especially as a handset that comes with premium level specifications but with a more accessible pricing. Now, the Chinese phone maker is trying to take full advantage of the warm reception of the Axon 7 by unveiling a follow up that is even more affordable.
Meet the Axon 7 Mini, which as suggested by its name, is basically a smaller and even cheaper version of the Axon 7. ZTE’s newest smartphone offering will launch in the United States mobile market next month, and although pricing in America has not been revealed yet, prospective buyers should know that the device will retail in the European mobile market for 299 euros, which is around $330. That price is significantly less than the $400 price of the Axon 7, and other devices with similar specs, such as Alcatel’s Idol 4S and the OnePlus 3.
ZTE’s Axon 7 Mini features a 5.2 inch AMOLED display screen with a resolution of 1,080 by 1,920 pixels and pixel density of 424 ppi. The smartphone is fitted with a 16 megapixel main camera on the rear side (f/1.9 aperture, with dual LED flash and phase detector auto focus), as well as an 8 megapixel selfie camera on the front side (f/2.2 aperture). With regards to hardware specifications, the Axon 7 Mini packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 eight core chip set, with the Adreno 405 graphics processing unit (GPU), supported with 3 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 32 gigabytes of built in memory. The Axon 7 Mini also comes with a 2,705 mAh battery, and is powered by Google’s Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Phablets are cool and all, but some users, a 5.5 inch device may just prove too tricky to handle at times, which makes the 5.2 inch Axon 7 Mini an interesting option for users who want a comfy handset they can afford. At $330, the smartphone may be the best option for its price. But the competition can be unforgiving, especially at this time of the year. The last quarter is frequently filled with new smartphone releases, some from the biggest phone makers of the world. While ZTE has proven itself to be a capable player, it still needs to establish its presence more especially in a major mobile market like the US, where the Samsungs and the Apples of the world are the undisputed rulers.
