Here is some bit of good news for all gamers out there -- SEGA is set to bring its most beloved classic game titles to smartphones and tablet devices for free. This is made possible by way of a free to play format that comes with ads (which generate the revenue, not money from players), support for offline playing, and plus other cool features (like the ability to save game play in the cloud). Moreover, SEGA’s mobile games can be offered as an ad free version, as long as customers are willing to pay $1.99, which is not bad when you know what you are going to get.
So which titles from SEGA exactly are coming to mobile? Well, the SEGA Forever collection includes Sonic The Hedgehog (the 1991 edition), Phantasy Star II (the all time favorite role playing game), Comix Zone (the arcade classic), Kid Chameleon, and Altered Beast (Greek brawls galore). These titles will each be made available on both the Google Play store for Android mobile users as well as on Apple’s App Store for iOS users (each title will be bundled with iMessage sticker packs).
Of course, those five titles are only just the beginning. As a matter of fact, SEGA is planning to add new titles to the SEGA Forever collection every couple of weeks. This should be super welcome news for long time SEGA fans -- not only will the bi-monthly releases indulge their nostalgia, but also give them something to look forward to every fortnight. The upcoming titles will later on expand to also include multiple console generations, and even official emulations and ported games.
The great thing about reintroducing classic games is that the titles you are releasing already have a built in audience. What SEGA is doing is extra cool because it actually makes the mobile games available free of charge. That is such a refreshing change from the usual game discovery process, in which a consumer sometimes downloads and installs a new mobile game only to find out later that it was not really right up his alley. But with familiar games, you are reliving the days you enjoyed playing that title, so expectations are rarely not met, well except maybe for first timers.
Note that the Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star II, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Altered Beast will be making their respective debuts on June 22nd, which means you better have your game face on ready.
