According to the results of an online study recently conducted by Gartner, worldwide smartphone sales in 2018 will see some growth for the first time since 2015. The last couple of years have seen industry growth stall a bit, but by next year, the volume of smartphone units shipped across the globe is expected to reach an estimated 1.9 billion units, which represents a 2 percent improvement as compared to this year’s.
Gartner’s study also states that one of Apple’s flagship offerings this year, the iPhone X, will be the main driving force of the growth in smartphones sales around the world next year. The device will likely do well sales wise in major mobile markets such as North America, China, and Western Europe.
While it is true that technically speaking, the iPhone X’s release date is November 3rd of this year, mobile users are still expected to be buying the handset starting this upcoming holiday shopping season and will keep doing so well into next year. Interestingly, reports of production issues concerning the iPhone X might result to a limited supply for the device beginning next month. And if the shortages continue, it is quite possible that majority of iPhone X sales will happen in 2018, despite the fact that Apple has always had a historically great track record when it comes to winter sales.
What about the two other new iPhone models this year, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus? Somewhat surprisingly, the iPhone 8 devices are not doing as well as generally expected, at least for a new iPhone release. Earlier this week, a Reuters report indicated that last year’s iPhone 7 models appear to be selling better than this year’s iPhone 8 offerings, at least according to the results of carrier store surveys conducted by KeyBanc Capital Markets.
Past years have shown that the newest iPhone models always sell quickly during the first few weeks after launch. Of course, it bears noting that this year, Apple had somewhat veered away from its usual style of launching of a new device -- instead of releasing a couple of new models, it introduced three, the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X. Moreover, the iPhone 8 devices had a separate launch date (September 22nd) from the iPhone X (November 3rd). This might have divided the attention of prospective buyers. And for those who already made up their mind to buy a new iPhone, the general expectation is that they will go for the iPhone X, which is undoubtedly a superior offering compared to the iPhone 8 models, at least in terms of specifications and features.
