Less than a month ago, Samsung had revealed that preorder sales numbers for its latest flagship devices -- the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus -- were shattering its own records. Preorder sales, however, are just one indication of a smartphone release’s success, and people can be forgiven for wanting to get some hard data.
Well, just recently, the biggest smartphone vendor in the world is now reporting that it has managed to sell 5 million units of its Galaxy S8 devices across the globe, since the flagship offerings made their worldwide debut back in April 21st last month. This is pretty impressive, considering that it has not been a full month since the handsets had officially launched, and also when taking into account that the phablets so far have only been made available in a limited number of mobile markets around the world.
Samsung has not disclosed any information yet with regards to which specific model is selling more than the other, although it can be argued that due to the regular Galaxy S8’s lesser price, it may have better unit sales figures. Also, comparing the Galaxy S8 to its predecessor, last year’s Galaxy S7, may be easier said than done, at least for now. It does bear noting that Samsung did state that preorders now have increased 30 percent as compared to a year ago. Pitting the Galaxy S8’s numbers against other rival smartphones is sort of complicated, too. Sure, despite the fact that competitor Apple announced around a couple of weeks ago that it had sold 50.8 million units of its iPhone devices during the first three months of this year, it did not divulge specific sales figures for its current flagships, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Further complicating things is the fact that Apple’s numbers are for a three month period, while Samsung’s Galaxy S8 figures correspond only to a period of less than a month.
Still, Samsung has plenty of reason to celebrate right now. Around three weeks ago, it did manage to regain its title as the world’s number phone maker. More remarkably, the South Korean mobile manufacturer did it before it launched its newest additions to its Galaxy lineup of smartphone devices.
And the company is poised to generate added momentum -- by the time, the second quarter of this year wraps up, Samsung will have sold more Galaxy S8 units across the globe, including specific mobile markets where the devices have yet to land. Also, the phone maker announced about a week ago that it will start offering unlocked versions of its latest flagship handsets (the unlocked units will launch this coming May 31st), which should mean the Galaxy S8’s sales figures should further grow.
