For many, the arrival of September signals the start of the end of the summer season, and presumably the beginning of autumn. For mobile users across the globe, the onset of September really only means one thing -- Apple unveiling a new iPhone model (or more than one). This year, however, is sort of special. 2017 happens to be the 10th year of the iPhone’s existence, and industry watchers and consumers alike are fully expecting Apple to introduce a similarly special iPhone offering (which may or may not be called the iPhone 8). It remains to be seen for now if this year’s iPhone will be the iPhone to rule them all, but having said that, the excitement should still be at fever pitch nonetheless. So to provide a preview of what to expect on Tuesday, scroll down below.
New iPhones
First off is the rumored 10th anniversary iPhone. As mentioned earlier, we do not know for sure yet if it will be called the iPhone 8, the iPhone X, or the iPhone Edition (for convenience, we will use the last one for the remainder of this article). What we really have right now is speculation, and there is plenty of it. There is talk for instance that this new model will sport an almost bezel-less display (like other recent releases like Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8, and LG’s G6 and V30 devices). The screen is also said to be of the organic light emitting diode (OLED) type, which should deliver more vivid colors and improved contrast. But perhaps the biggest rumored change is the elimination of the home button, which for nearly a decade has been a steady feature of iPhone devices. For this year’s model, that home button will be supplanted with a virtual area at the bottom of the nearly bezel-less screen. Another notable change is wireless charging. Other rumors worth mentioning are enhanced camera specs, new AR features (thanks to Apple’s ARKit system).
Apart from introducing the 10th anniversary iPhone, Apple is also expected to announce follow ups to last year’s iPhone 7 models. Many are expecting the usual upgrades typically seen on “S” models, which is basically the same as saying that the new offerings will have some improvements, but really nothing major (as opposed to the iPhone Edition, see preceding paragraph). Much of the rumors circulating in recent months have revolved around the iPhone Edition, but there is talk that this year’s S devices will get updated camera specs and likely, the same chip as the iPhone Edition.
New Apple Watch
While most iOS mobile users are excited about the iPhone Edition, those looking to purchase an Apple Watch (or those who want to upgrade their existing unit) are no doubt awaiting the official introduction the rumored Apple Watch with LTE model. The Apple Watch is already considered one of the coolest (and most popular) wearable devices of all time, but it is still pretty dependent on an iPhone to get LTE connectivity. That should change if Apple releases an LTE enabled wearable device.
Software News
Hardcore fans are also awaiting news on iOS 11, the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. It goes without saying that that excitement also extends to some extent to WatchOS 4 (for wearable devices) and macOS High Sierra (for Mac machines).
HomePod News
Earlier this year during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple had talked about its HomePod, its music speaker that also serves as a digital assistant. Interested parties would love to get some new information about the device, especially with regards to availability, specifically timelines on preorder and shipping dates.
Apple TV Updates
Some reports indicate that Apple will also be announcing an Apple TV set top box that comes with support for 4K and HDR. And with news that the iTunes Stores is making preparations to offer 4K content recently, there is indeed a possibility that 4K and HDR compatibility is coming to the Apple TV.
