Penetrating the United States market has always been a bit of a challenge for Sony. Despite having released its Xperia Ultra Google Play Edition and Xperia Z1S (via T-Mobile), the Japanese phone maker is still trying to expose more of its smartphone line of products to American users.
Still, things are recently turning for the better for the company. Days ago, news broke out that the mobile manufacturer's Xperia Z3 is being released by T-Mobile. And just today, Verizon Wireless announced that it will be pushing its own version of the Xperia Z3. Called the Xperia Z3v, the device will be made available for purchase on Verizon stores beginning October 23rd this year for $200.00 with contract. On top of that, Verizon stated that the Sony Smartwatch 3 will also be offered by the carrier sometime in late fall for $250.00.
Even though the Xperia Z3v shares some its specs with the international edition, there are some few differences. Yes, Verizon subscribers can still expect the 5.2-inch 1080p display screen, the 20-megapixel Exmor camera, the 2.5 GigaHertz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 32 gigabytes of internal storage, and a microSD slot that handles up to 128 gigabytes of additional memory. However, Verizon has some tweaks if its own. For instance, the carrier has added Qi wireless charging to its Z3 version. Furthermore, Verizon's Z3 comes with a bigger battery -- it sports a 3,200 mAh battery, whereas the international model has a 3,100 mAh battery.
As for the design, Verizon has also made some slight changes. For one, the Xperia Z3v is a bit thicker and wider. Also, its edges are not as rounded as the international version -- the edge part where the sides meet with the front and back bezels is angled and is made of polycarbonate. Some of tabs, like the microSD tab for example, feature rectangular corners as opposed to more round-shaped corners.
Like all Xperia Z3 editions, the Z3v is designed to be both waterproof and dustproof. As a matter of fact, the device comes with an IP68 certification for waterproofing, so this should come as welcome news for Verizon's outdoor- and water-loving subscribers.
As mentioned earlier, the Xperia Z3v will be available for $200.00 starting on October 23, which is roughly two weeks from now. Verizon is only offering the Xperia Z3v in black and white options, which might be a bummer, especially for users who expect more color options (the standard Z3 is available in more than just two colors).
