Sprint has just announced a new iPhone Forever special offer. In this latest promotion from the wireless carrier, new or current subscribers of Sprint who are qualified for upgrades can purchase a 16 gigabyte edition of Apple’s iPhone 6 for $22 every month. Plus, through December 31st of this year, subscribers can lower that price down to just $15 a month if they decide to trade in their current handset.
If they choose to upgrade to the latest iPhone model after December 31st, the monthly installment rate will revert to $22. However, Sprint will be paying off the subscriber’s old handset as well as the contract so that the customer can switch to the new plan. With this new promo, the carrier has just made it easier for its subscribers to always own the latest version of the iPhone.
Recently, various wireless carriers have been noticeably shifting their focus away from standard two year contracts and device subsidies, instead turning their attention to monthly pricing for handsets and upgrade anytime schemes. Sprint and T-Mobile have been leading the way in introducing plans that charge subscribers the full price of the handset in exchange for not burdening them with a regular two year contract, which essentially allows customers to upgrade to a new device anytime they want. As for the industry leaders -- AT&T provides a similar option via its Next installment plans, while Verizon Wireless has revealed its intention of getting rid of contracts and subsidies for new subscribers.
Shifting away two year contracts has its pros and cons. With wireless carrier phone subsidies, customers could pay a smaller amount of money for the handset all at once, and they just pay for the calls, texts, and data every month. But on subsidy-less plans, subscribers must also factor into the price of the handset, either paying the full cost upfront or paying off the device every month.
Wireless carriers now appear to believe that today’s subscribers will continue to favor zero contract plans in order to take advantage of upgrade anytime perks. For Sprint specifically, its new iPhone Forever promo allows it to compete with T-Mobile’s Jump! On Demand program, which lets subscribers upgrade their handsets anytime they want, but only up to three times within a year. T-Mobile’s special offer though expands the choice of handsets beyond the iPhone to other devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge and LG’s G4 device.
Still, Sprint’s promo is a very good deal, especially for those who do not have the latest iPhone. This special offer is available with any qualified Sprint rate plan, and future upgrade eligibility is included in the price. Those interested can sign up either via Sprint, or through Best Buy and Target.
