Sprint has just introduced a new family plan that should compete directly with T-Mobile’s Amped multiple line offering. For a limited time only, families or groups that decide to switch to Sprint will get to enjoy four lines of unlimited voice calls, unlimited text messaging, and 10 gigabytes of shared LTE data for $100 a month. Plus, all line access fees per month will be waived indefinitely.
The usual setup is that subscribers would pay an extra $15 a month for each new line of service added to their account. However, this new deal from Sprint essentially eliminates this fee, not just for a limited time, but for the duration of the life of the family plan.
As for those subscribers who feel that 10 gigabytes just do not cut it, they can also choose to boost their data allowance four fold to 40 gigabytes by paying an additional $20 a month. Just to be clear about it, the data will be shared between four lines of service, but subscribers will not be required to pay the $15 line access fees every month for each line of service.
To qualify for this deal, subscribers will have to switch to Sprint from another rival wireless carrier, and then port their numbers to the new family plan and buy new mobile devices from Sprint, either via Sprint Easy Pay or Sprint Lease. This deal is made available for a maximum number of four lines of service, and Sprint will not allow any bring your own device arrangement for this plan.
To summarize, Sprint is basically introducing a couple of brand new family plans: A $100 a month option that offers 10 gigabytes of shared data, and a $120 a month option that offers 40 gigabytes of shared data. The carrier is already highlighting the notion that choosing Sprint’s plan allows subscribers to save up to $700 every year compared to other equivalent plans offered by competitors such as Verizon Wireless and AT&T.
But when you compare Sprint’s new offer to T-Mobile’s recently launched $120 a month family plan that offers 40 gigabytes of shared data for four members, things get more intriguing. When it comes to prices and the amount of LTE data allowed per month, both Sprint’s and T-Mobile’s deals basically offer the same thing, although in Sprint’s case, the 40 gigabytes of data is shared between devices (in T-Mobile’s case, the four members of the plan each get 10 gigabytes of data). However, with T-Mobile, subscribers get to enjoy the benefits of Simple Choice plans, such as rollover data, Mobile Without Borders, and Music Freedom.
Sprint’s new $100 and $120 family plans will be made available to subscribers starting July 31st of this year. Sprint subscribers who switch to Easy Pay, iPhone for Life, or Sprint Lease can claim a prepaid reward card, as long as they surrender their old handsets to Sprint.
