The last few months have seen intensifying competition in the world of unlimited data, with Verizon Wirelessre-introducing its unlimited data option (Verizon Unlimited) more than a week ago, while other major mobile operators in America also making their respective countermoves. Sprint is no exception to this -- the carrier has recently lowered the pricing of its unlimited offering, and for good measure, added premium video, too.
For those existing subscribers who have already signed up under Sprint’s $50 Unlimited Freedom plan, or are planning to switch to this option, they will now get to enjoy premium resolution video streaming with no additional charges. Those currently subscribed to the original 480p plus streaming restriction now also have the option of upgrading to 1,080p plus by calling *2 using their Sprint handset. As for those who yet to sign up, they will automatically be granted faster streaming as one of the inclusions of their plan.
With regards to mobile hotspot allowances, they get upgraded, too. Before, subscribers could only enjoy 5 gigabytes of 4G LTE mobile hotspot use every month on the regular Unlimited option. But now, that has since been increased two fold to 10 gigabytes per month, consistent with the top tier Unlimited Freedom Premium plan.
On the subject of Unlimited Freedom Premium, this plan originally offered Sprint subscribers high video resolution (at 1,080p plus), as well as faster streaming for games and music, at $70 a month. But now that the carrier is incorporating HD video to the cheaper Unlimited Freedom option, those existing subscribers of Unlimited Freedom Premium will no longer have to pay the extra $20 for this plan. Those on Unlimited Freedom Premium will be bumped down to $50 a month, and also enjoy a boosted mobile hotspot allowance (up to 10 gigabytes of 4G LTE every month). Existing subscribers need not do anything -- Sprint will be adjusting the prices automatically beginning next month.
In other news, US Cellular is launching new plans, including a single line of service that offers unlimited data for $60 per month. Those availing of four lines of service will pay $160 per month (or $40 for each line).
These new plans are made available to both new and current customers with autopay and paperless billing, and they do not come with activation fees, monthly device connection charges, nor upgrade fees.
But what about the carrier’s existing plans with data caps? US Cellular will still continue to offer them.
